Weligama is a town on the south coast of Sri Lanka, located in Matara District, Southern Province, Sri Lanka. The name Weligama, literally means "sandy village" which refers to the area's sandy sweep bay. It is approximately 144 kilometers (89 mi) south of Colombo, Sri Lanka and is situated at an elevation of 9 meters (30 ft) above the sea level. It is no secret that Weligama is a has the best beach in the south coast Sri Lanka. Every year thousands of young travelers make their way to Weligama in search of surf beginner lessons and beach bars and clubs.

You can find Kabalana beach when you travel in the direction of the Galle from Weligama. Same as Midigama, Kabalana also recently became famous among surfers. Earlier this area was not much crowded but now attracts so many surfers as it is a good surfing point. This Kabalana reef break is mostly suitable for beginners. There are also some surfing schools around the area.

As this area has fast waves it is not much beginner-friendly. There are about five surf spots in MIdigama. Midigama also has good surfing schools that offer their services for affordable prices. There are also good restaurants around this area to have delicious meals and to grab a drink when you feel tired.

Polwatta River Safari

Polwatta river is located in the south of Sri Lanka in Weligama area. It opens to the Indian Ocean from Polwathumodara estuary is a very wide and a beautiful estuary in Sri Lanka. Treat yourself to a laid-back Polwatta River boat ride and immerse yourself in the scenic wonder of the southern coast. The tranquil river is flanked by lush mangroves abound with various species of birds and reptiles. Boat riders will take you from busy ocean atmosphere into a labyrinth of mangrove forests and exotic plants. There you will see hundreds of beautiful birds including Crimson-fronted barbet, wood peckers, king fishers, Black-hooded oriole and many, many others. A fish breeding center is located in the middle of the river offering an insight into the breeding cycle of local fish species. Taprobane Island | Ganduwa Island

Taprobane Island is the only privately owned island in Sri Lanka which is situated in Weligama coast. Taprobane was built in the 1920's by the eccentric English Count de Mauny as his dream home. The island, has played host to kings, queens, presidents, prime ministers, aristocracy, writers and eccentrics, giving it a very colorful history. This villa build in palladio style and located highest point of the 2 acre island with sweeping views of the Weligama bay. The house itself is planned around a central hexagonal hall and surrounded by large verandahs and terraces, it is a fantasy experience in outdoor living; perfect for honeymooners, families and anyone wanting to experience island life. Weligama and its surrounding beaches have some great shallow reefs which are guaranteed to provide some exceptional snorkelling experiences. A popular snorkelling site is Devil Rock, a small island just off the coast of Ahangama beach which is to the west of Weligama. The islet is made up of large rock boulders and a thick growth of green shrub jungle, but its main wonders lie beneath the surrounding glistening waters. Devil Rock is encircled by many small rocks which have been inundated by coral and have become a flourishing reef over time.
